Maritimes - A few different observances
We attended the CAHPI Canada Conference in Halifax, October 2012, and decided to take a few extra days to visit my son (who lives there now) and drive around the beautiful east coast provinces of Nova Scotia (including Cape Breton), PEI and New Brunswick.
A few things we noticed that are different than Lower Mainland neighbourhoods? Well, for one thing, there were no fences separating neighbours. Apart from a few small fences that kept vegetable gardens protected, farms, urban neighbourhoods and suburban neighbourhoods had few if any fences, which tells me that people seem to be a lot more friendly back east. As we spoke to the locals, in many cases they don't lock their doors. And as we drove down the road, we noticed very polite driving habits; everyone to right right unless you want to pass. And everyone was driving the speed limit. We were passing if we drove 5k/hr over the speed limit. We drove rush hour times on Sydney Nova Scotia and there were two cars driving north with us. Good times to be had in every province. We went to local farmer's markets, enjoyed a small town lobster dinner in New Glasgow, PEI, walked around nighttime Halifax for the Nocturne Festival (a one night only arts festival) There was lots to see and do, but the best part of almost every holiday is the people you meet, and the day after you get home.
